Crew & Equipment

Kenya has one of Africa’s most established crew bases outside South Africa, experienced on wildlife documentaries, commercials, features, television and stills.

Available crew includes local producers, fixers, production managers, DOPs, camera and drone operators, wildlife and safari specialists, sound recordists, stylists, hair and make-up and production assistants.

Professional camera, lighting, grip and aerial equipment is available in Nairobi, with additional specialist packages brought in from South Africa or Europe when required.

Accommodation availability and rates vary by season and should be booked well in advance. African Fixer manages crew and cast bookings, transfers and per-location logistics as part of production support.

Best Time to Shoot

  • July to October – Dry season and the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara – the flagship window.
  • January to February – A second dry, clear spell, good for most locations and the coast.
  • March to May – Long rains bring lush landscapes but wetter, harder access.
  • November to December – Short rains; green scenery with intermittent showers.
Visa Requirements

International cast and crew should confirm visa and work permission requirements before travelling. Typical documents may include a valid passport, flight details, accommodation details, invitation letter, crew list and equipment list.

International Crew Accreditation

International productions may require local coordination, film permissions and supporting letters depending on the production type, locations and crew nationality, and should work with an in-country fixer or service company.

General Film Permit

Filming in Kenya is facilitated by the Kenya Film Commission, with a filming licence issued via the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), county-level permits and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) permits for national parks and reserves. Crew require the appropriate work permits or special passes. Allow lead time and work through a local service company.

Drone Permit

Drone filming requires authorisation and registration through the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), plus an import permit, and rules are strictly enforced. Approvals should be arranged well in advance, especially near airports, parks and urban areas.

Equipment Customs Clearance

Professional equipment can usually be temporarily imported with the correct customs documentation. An ATA Carnet may be used where applicable, and equipment lists should be prepared in advance.

Safety and Security

Kenya has excellent production infrastructure and long international experience. Standard urban precautions apply in Nairobi and Mombasa, some northern and border regions carry travel advisories, and malaria precautions are advised on the coast and in lowland areas. Private medical facilities in Nairobi are strong.

Rebates & Incentives

Kenya does not currently operate a national cash rebate for international productions, though reforms and new incentives for foreign producers have been proposed and are reported to be under development.

Even so, Kenya remains highly competitive thanks to its deep, English-speaking crew base, iconic locations and strong logistics. African Fixer will confirm the latest position on any incentives, permit fees and KWS charges during planning.
