The Rise of African Cinema: A New Era of Film, Funding & Global Recognition

April 9, 2025

The African film industry is entering a transformative era filled with growth, innovation, and increasing international attention. With major investments, ground breaking productions, and global recognition on the rise, Africa is becoming a key player in the world of cinema.

At African Fixer, we proudly support high-quality film and television productions across the continent. From location scouting to permit acquisition and customs clearance, we offer tailored production solutions. There has never been a more exciting time to be part of this movement.

Fuelling Growth Through Strategic Film Investments

Several funding initiatives are reshaping the African film landscape, making it easier for creatives to bring their visions to life.

1. Next Narrative Africa Fund and HEVA Fund
These partners have launched a $40 million investment fund to support African film projects. Targeting productions with budgets between $1–5 million, the fund offers a blend of grants and equity investments. Consequently, African creatives now have unprecedented access to meaningful financial support that values their narratives globally.

2. African Audio visual and Cinema Commission (AACC)
Established by the African Union in 2024, the AACC focuses on research, distribution, and policy development. The commission is also preparing to introduce the African Audio Visual and Cinema Fund. This initiative will enhance regional collaboration and increase the visibility of African productions across the world.

International Productions Choosing Africa

Large-scale productions are increasingly turning their lenses toward Africa, underscoring the continent’s creative and logistical strengths.

For example, “Children of Blood and Bone”—a major fantasy film—is currently filming in South Africa. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and featuring Viola Davis and Idris Elba, the film adapts Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel. It is expected to hit screens in 2027.

Additionally, “Granny Lee”—a biopic honouring Johannesburg’s 1980s transgender icon—is now in pre-production. With Soli Philander starring and Alexandra Billings as executive producer, the film continues South Africa’s tradition of bold, inclusive storytelling.

Technology and Festivals Driving Innovation

Film festivals across Africa are embracing emerging technologies and new modes of collaboration. A key example is the upcoming Hollywood African Cinema Connection (HACC), set to take place in Cape Town from April 11–14, 2025.

Notably, this festival will explore how blockchain can revolutionize film funding and distribution. As a result, Africa is gaining recognition not just for its powerful narratives, but also for its innovation in sustainable filmmaking solutions.

Global Stars Investing Locally

International creatives are taking notice—and taking action. For instance, Idris Elba has announced plans to build studios in both Ghana and Tanzania. His goal is to empower African creators and establish world-class facilities on the continent. His mission reflects our own values at African Fixer: we believe in long-term investment and hands-on support for African storytelling.

Honouring a Legend in African Cinema

In March 2025, the world lost a cinematic pioneer. Souleymane Cissé, the legendary Malian director, passed away after decades of ground breaking work. His legacy lives on in the many filmmakers he inspired and in the global attention he brought to African cinema.
