Crew & Equipment

Ghana has a growing, capable crew base experienced in commercials, documentaries, music videos, television and stills, centred on Accra and Kumasi.

Available crew includes local producers, fixers, production managers, camera operators, drone operators, sound, art department, stylists and production assistants, with senior technical crew and specialist gear supplemented from the region when needed.

Camera, lighting and grip equipment is available in Accra for many productions; larger or specialist packages may be brought in from abroad or neighbouring hubs.

Accommodation availability and rates vary by season and should be booked well in advance. African Fixer manages crew and cast bookings, transfers and per-location logistics as part of production support.

Best Time to Shoot

  • November to March – Dry season with the most reliable shooting conditions.
  • The Harmattan (December to February) – Dry, hazy desert-wind light in the north, worth planning around for clarity and drone work.
  • April to October – Wetter, greener seasons with heavier rains around May–June and September–October.
  • The north (Mole, Larabanga) is best in the dry season for road access and wildlife.
Visa Requirements

International cast and crew should confirm visa and work permission requirements before travelling. Typical documents may include a valid passport, flight details, accommodation details, invitation letter, crew list and equipment list.

Airport Tax

A $100 departure tax is included in flight tickets. No separate application is needed.

International Crew Accreditation

International productions may require local coordination, film permissions and supporting letters depending on the production type, locations and crew nationality, and should work with an in-country fixer or service company.

General Film Permit

Filming permits and accreditation are arranged through the National Film Authority (NFA) and relevant bodies. Heritage sites such as the Cape Coast and Elmina castles require permission from the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and national parks require park permits. Work through a local fixer and allow lead time.

Drone Permit

Commercial drone filming requires registration and a permit from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and should be arranged in advance, particularly near airports, cities and sensitive sites.

Equipment Customs Clearance

Professional equipment can usually be temporarily imported with the correct customs documentation. An ATA Carnet may be used where applicable, and equipment lists should be prepared in advance.

Safety and Security

Ghana is one of West Africa’s safest and most stable countries, with good infrastructure in Accra and Kumasi. Standard urban precautions apply, roads in remote areas require planning, and malaria precautions are advised. Private medical facilities are best in Accra.

PRO TIP:

Shoot the north (Mole, Larabanga, Paga) and the castles in the dry season, and use the Harmattan window for its distinctive hazy light – but plan drone and wide vistas around the haze, which can soften long-distance clarity.
