Best Time to Shoot

  • October to May – Dry season with clearer skies, the main window for most productions.
  • November to February – Cool, dry highland conditions ideal for heritage and mountain shoots.
  • June to September – Main rains bring green landscapes but muddy roads and access challenges in the highlands.
  • The Danakil is best filmed in the cooler months (November to February) due to extreme heat.
Visa Requirements

International cast and crew should confirm visa and work permission requirements before travelling. Typical documents may include a valid passport, flight details, accommodation details, invitation letter, crew list and equipment list.

International Crew Accreditation

International productions may require local coordination, film permissions and supporting letters depending on the production type, locations and crew nationality, and should work with an in-country fixer or service company.

General Film Permit

Filming permits are required and are arranged through the Ethiopian Film office and relevant authorities, with heritage-site permissions via the national heritage authority (ARCCH). Remote and border regions, the Danakil and the Omo Valley require additional regional permissions, local guides and, in some cases, security escorts. Allow generous lead time and work through an experienced local fixer.

Drone Permit

Drone filming requires authorisation from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority and can be restricted, especially near heritage sites, government buildings and sensitive regions. Import of drones is controlled, so clearances must be arranged well in advance.

Equipment Customs Clearance

Professional equipment can usually be temporarily imported with the correct customs documentation. An ATA Carnet may be used where applicable, and equipment lists should be prepared in advance.

Safety and Security

Ethiopia rewards careful planning. Some regions are affected by security concerns and carry travel advisories, so routing, timing and local advice are essential. Medical facilities are limited outside Addis Ababa, and much of the country is at high altitude, so acclimatisation, evacuation planning and experienced local support should be built into the schedule.
