Crew & Equipment
Ethiopia is best suited to documentary, travel, cultural and commercial productions, supported by experienced local fixers used to remote and logistically complex shoots.
A local crew base of producers, fixers, guides, drivers and production assistants is available in Addis Ababa; senior technical crew and specialist equipment are generally brought in from abroad, often via Addis Ababa’s international hub.
Productions should plan to import camera, drone and specialist packages, and to budget for 4×4 transport, charter flights and mobile logistics for remote locations such as the Danakil and Omo Valley.

Crew & Cast Accommodation
Accommodation is strongest in Addis Ababa, with regional hotels and lodges near the main heritage and landscape sites and mobile camps for the most remote areas such as the Danakil and Omo Valley.
Luxury (talent, directors, key clients)
- Sheraton Addis / Hyatt Regency Addis – Premium bases for talent and clients.
- Kuriftu Resort (Bahir Dar) / Limalimo Lodge (Simien) – Standout regional options.
Mid-range (main crew, production team)
- Addis Ababa: Skylight, Radisson Blu, Golden Tulip and Ramada – Reliable mid-range city hotels.
- Gondar & Lalibela: Goha Hotel and Mountain View – Comfortable regional bases.
- Bahir Dar & Hawassa: Kuriftu and Haile Resort – Lakeside crew hotels.
Budget & serviced options (extended crew, longer shoots)
- Regional town guesthouses and pensions – Value options near heritage sites.
- Mobile tented camps – Essential and arranged for Danakil and Omo Valley shoots, with catering and logistics.
Accommodation availability and rates vary by season and should be booked well in advance. African Fixer manages crew and cast bookings, transfers and per-location logistics as part of production support.
Best Time to Shoot
- October to May – Dry season with clearer skies, the main window for most productions.
- November to February – Cool, dry highland conditions ideal for heritage and mountain shoots.
- June to September – Main rains bring green landscapes but muddy roads and access challenges in the highlands.
- The Danakil is best filmed in the cooler months (November to February) due to extreme heat.
Visa Requirements
International cast and crew should confirm visa and work permission requirements before travelling. Typical documents may include a valid passport, flight details, accommodation details, invitation letter, crew list and equipment list.
-
Required Documents
Valid passport (at least six months validity), COVID vaccination certificate (not always required)
-
Timings
2-3 weeks
International Crew Accreditation
International productions may require local coordination, film permissions and supporting letters depending on the production type, locations and crew nationality, and should work with an in-country fixer or service company.
-
Required Documentation
Passport (valid for at least six months), Invitation letter from a local sponsor (our agency), Letter to Ethiopian Embassy including: Film title and purpose, Production company and crew details, Synopsis and shooting schedule, Equipment list with serial numbers, Local contact person details
-
Processing Steps
Submit documents to the Ethiopian Embassy. Embassy reviews and forwards to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hoodlum Ethiopia collects application and begins permit process. Ethiopian Media Authority forwards documents to the Immigration Office. Immigration Office issues visa and customs clearance letter. Crew member obtains shooting permit with a portrait photo.
-
Timings
2-3 weeks
General Film Permit
Filming permits are required and are arranged through the Ethiopian Film office and relevant authorities, with heritage-site permissions via the national heritage authority (ARCCH). Remote and border regions, the Danakil and the Omo Valley require additional regional permissions, local guides and, in some cases, security escorts. Allow generous lead time and work through an experienced local fixer.
Drone Permit
Drone filming requires authorisation from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority and can be restricted, especially near heritage sites, government buildings and sensitive regions. Import of drones is controlled, so clearances must be arranged well in advance.
-
Importation Regulations
Drone importation is not allowed. Drone application is included in the general film permit process.
-
Permit Issuance
The Ethiopian Aviation Minister issues drone permits.
-
Required Documentation
Letter stating exact flying locations, Project details and filming schedule
-
Timings
3 working days (included in the film permit process)
Equipment Customs Clearance
Professional equipment can usually be temporarily imported with the correct customs documentation. An ATA Carnet may be used where applicable, and equipment lists should be prepared in advance.
-
Clearance Process
All equipment is inspected upon arrival and departure at airport customs.
-
Required Documentation
Equipment list with values and serial numbers, Completed customs clearance application
-
Issuing Organization
Ethiopian Media Authority
-
Timings
2-3 weeks
Safety and Security
Ethiopia rewards careful planning. Some regions are affected by security concerns and carry travel advisories, so routing, timing and local advice are essential. Medical facilities are limited outside Addis Ababa, and much of the country is at high altitude, so acclimatisation, evacuation planning and experienced local support should be built into the schedule.
-
Security Recommendations
Avoid high-risk regions and opt for secure transportation. Consider flights into Jimma instead of overland travel in certain areas. Security assistance can be arranged based on the travel itinerary. Hoodlum Film Fixers works closely with local authorities to ensure crew safety.
Rebates & Incentives
Ethiopia does not currently operate a formal national film rebate or cash incentive scheme for international productions, so budgets should not rely on a rebate.
African Fixer will confirm the latest position on permit fees, site charges and any incentives during planning, and manage the permissions and logistics that make Ethiopia’s remarkable locations accessible.

Did you know?
Ethiopia follows its own calendar and clock, was never colonised, and is home to a lava lake that has bubbled for over a century and churches carved down into solid rock 800 years ago – a depth of living history and landscape that gives productions genuinely singular material.
PRO TIP:
Build in extra time and robust logistics for remote shoots: the Danakil and Omo Valley need 4x4s, guides, permits, mobile camps and, ideally, charter flights – and the cooler months (November to February) are far more workable for the extreme-heat locations.
