June 11, 2025

Tanzania offers filmmakers a rich tapestry of natural beauty, wildlife, and vibrant culture. From the bustling city of Dar es Salaam to the stunning landscapes of Serengeti and Zanzibar, it’s an attractive destination for film crews worldwide. To ensure a smooth production process, it is important to understand Tanzania’s visa requirements, film permits, drone regulations, customs clearance, and safety considerations.

Film crews must apply for a Business Visa to enter Tanzania for filming activities.

International Crew Accreditation (FIVA Letter)

Filmmakers must obtain international crew accreditation to work legally.

Required Documents:

  • Completed accreditation form
  • Letter from the media house
  • Copy of passport
  • Recommendation letter from the media house
  • Proof of accreditation from the country of origin
  • Three passport-sized photos

Film Permits

The Tanzania Film Board or Tanzania High Commission in Nairobi issues all film permits.

Application Requirements:

  • Complete the Film Permit Application Form
  • Attach a cover letter explaining reasons for filming
  • Invitation or recommendation letter from your host
  • Script, synopsis, and filming schedule
  • Interview questions (if applicable)
  • Passport copies of the crew
  • List of equipment with specifications
  • List of supporting crew from Tanzania

Timeline & Costs:

  • Standard permit processing takes 1 to 2 weeks after payment
  • Apply at least one month before filming to avoid the $3,000 fast-track fee
  • Normal permit fee is $1,000; fast-track processing costs $3,000

Drone Regulations

Drone use in Tanzania is strictly regulated by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) and the Ministry of Defence.

Importation & Operation:

  • You must obtain a permit to import or operate a drone
  • Submit an application form along with pilot details, drone specifications, insurance, and proof of training
  • Drone registration costs vary by weight class:
    • Class 1 (under 5 kg): $100 per drone
    • Class 2 (5 to 25 kg): $200 per drone
  • Operation permit costs $1,000 per project for foreign crews

Processing Time:

  • Expect 4 to 6 weeks for permit approval

Equipment Customs Clearance

Tanzania is not a signatory to the ATA Carnet system. Therefore, temporary import of film equipment requires working with a local bond agent who facilitates customs clearance.

Process:

  • Pay a non-refundable bond of 10% of your equipment’s value
  • Submit an equipment list, passport copies, and flight details
  • Customs clearance is overseen by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA)
  • Clearance processing takes 1 to 2 weeks
  • Service fees to the bond agent typically amount to around $1,500

Safety and Security

Tanzania is known as one of Africa’s most peaceful and politically stable countries. Since independence in 1961, it has remained free from civil wars, making it a safe and attractive location for filmmakers.

Security Recommendations:

  • When filming in crowded public spaces, local police support is recommended
  • An army official must be present during drone operations
