Best Time To Shoot

  • October to April – Warm, long summer days in the Western Cape, ideal for beach, coastal and exterior work.
  • May to September – Dry winter is best for safari and wildlife in the Kruger and bushveld; the interior stays clear and sunny.
  • Counter-seasonal advantage – South African summer runs during the Northern Hemisphere winter, useful for doubling European or US summer.
  • Plan Cape Town summer shoots around the south-easter wind (the “Cape Doctor”), which is strongest from November to February.
Visa Requirements

International cast and crew should confirm visa and work permission requirements before travelling. Typical documents may include a valid passport, flight details, accommodation details, invitation letter, crew list and equipment list.

International Crew Accreditation

International productions may require local coordination, film permissions and supporting letters depending on the production type, locations and crew nationality.

General Film Permit

Public filming is managed through city and provincial film permit offices (such as the Cape Town Film Permit Office). National parks, game reserves, beaches and heritage sites may require additional permissions. Processing time depends on locations, crew size and production requirements.

Drone Permit

Commercial drone filming is regulated by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and requires an approved operator, RPAS licensing and permissions. Drone approvals should be arranged early, especially near cities, airports, reserves and coastal areas.

Equipment Customs Clearance

South Africa is a Carnet country, meaning international crews must obtain an ATA Carnet in their home country before arrival.

Safety and Security

South Africa has excellent private medical facilities and strong production infrastructure. Standard urban safety planning, secure transport, on-set security and location risk assessments should be built into the schedule.

Rebates & Incentives

South Africa operates a Foreign Film and Television Production and Post-Production Incentive through the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), historically calculated at 25% of Qualifying South African Production Expenditure (QSAPE), with an additional 5% available for productions that also complete post-production locally and use a qualifying black-owned service company.

Important current status: as of 2026 the foreign film incentive is under an administrative review and approval freeze, with new applications and Letters of Approval effectively paused and a backlog of payments being addressed. Productions should not budget on the rebate as guaranteed until the scheme’s status is confirmed.

African Fixer will confirm the latest position on the incentive, eligibility criteria and application procedures during production planning, so clients have accurate, up-to-date information before committing to a schedule.

Even without relying on the incentive, South Africa remains highly cost-competitive thanks to the favourable exchange rate, deep crew base and strong local infrastructure.
