Crew & Equipment

Mozambique suits travel, marine, wildlife and documentary productions, with local fixers and dive teams, especially around Maputo, Vilanculos and Inhambane.

A local crew base of producers, fixers, dive and boat teams and production assistants is available; senior technical crew and specialist equipment are generally brought in from South Africa.

Productions plan to import camera, underwater and drone packages, and to arrange boats, flights and island logistics.

Accommodation availability and rates vary by season and should be booked well in advance. African Fixer manages crew and cast bookings, transfers and per-location logistics as part of production support.

Best Time to Shoot

  • April to October – Dry season with the best conditions.
  • May to September – Cooler, drier and calmest for the islands and diving.
  • Whale sharks and mantas off Tofo are seasonal, worth planning marine shoots around.
  • November to April is the wet and cyclone season, to be planned carefully.
Visa Requirements

International cast and crew should confirm visa and work permission requirements before travelling. Typical documents may include a valid passport, flight details, accommodation details, invitation letter, crew list and equipment list.

International Crew Accreditation

International productions may require local coordination, film permissions and supporting letters depending on the production type, locations and crew nationality, and should work with an in-country fixer or service company.

General Film Permit

Filming permits are arranged through the relevant authorities, with island, marine-park and heritage permissions where needed. Work through a local fixer and allow lead time.

Drone Permit

Drone filming requires authorisation from the civil aviation authority (IACM), with restrictions over marine parks and sensitive sites. Permissions should be arranged in advance.

Equipment Customs Clearance

Professional equipment can usually be temporarily imported with the correct customs documentation. An ATA Carnet may be used where applicable, and equipment lists should be prepared in advance.

Safety and Security

Southern and central Mozambique – Maputo, Bazaruto, Vilanculos, Tofo and Gorongosa – are the main, generally safe production areas. Importantly, the far-northern province of Cabo Delgado (including parts of the Pemba and Quirimbas region) has been affected by an insurgency and carries serious travel advisories, so shoots there require careful, current feasibility assessment. Cyclone season and malaria are further considerations.

Rebates & Incentives

Mozambique does not currently operate a clearly established national film cash rebate for international productions; some minimum-spend incentive thresholds have been reported through service networks, but their status is not well confirmed.

African Fixer will verify the latest position on any incentives and permit fees during planning, and manage the permissions and marine logistics that make Mozambique’s coast accessible.
