Crew & Equipment

Uganda suits wildlife, documentary, conservation, travel and adventure productions, with experienced local fixers used to forest, park and remote logistics.

A local crew base of producers, fixers, guides, drivers and production assistants operates from Kampala and Entebbe; senior technical crew and specialist equipment are generally brought in from Kenya, South Africa or abroad.

Productions plan for 4×4 transport, internal flights and park logistics, and typically import camera, long-lens and drone packages; gorilla and chimp filming has strict rules and limited permits.

Accommodation availability and rates vary by season and should be booked well in advance. African Fixer manages crew and cast bookings, transfers and per-location logistics as part of production support.

Best Time To Shoot

  • June to August and December to February – The two dry seasons, best for access and wildlife.
  • Gorilla and chimp tracking is possible year-round but easier on the drier trails.
  • March to May and September to November – Wetter seasons bring lush, green landscapes but muddier forest trails.
  • The Rwenzori and forest interiors can be wet at any time, so plan cover and rain days.
Visa Requirements

International cast and crew should confirm visa and work permission requirements before travelling. Typical documents may include a valid passport, flight details, accommodation details, invitation letter, crew list and equipment list.

International Crew Accreditation

International productions may require local coordination, film permissions and supporting letters depending on the production type, locations and crew nationality, and should work with an in-country fixer or service company.

General Film Permit

The issuing organization varies depending on the shooting location. In Kampala, permits are issued by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA); in Entebbe, by the Entebbe Municipal Council; and in other areas outside cities, by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and the police.

Drone Permit

Drone filming requires authorisation from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority and separate UWA permission in national parks, and importing drones is controlled. Approvals should be arranged well in advance.

Equipment Customs Clearance

Professional equipment can usually be temporarily imported with the correct customs documentation. An ATA Carnet may be used where applicable, and equipment lists should be prepared in advance.

Safety and Security

Uganda is safe and welcoming in its main tourist and production areas, with good facilities in Kampala and Entebbe. Standard precautions apply, some border regions carry travel advisories, malaria precautions are advised, and forest and remote-park shoots require robust logistics and medical planning.

Rebates & Incentives

Uganda does not currently operate a formal national film cash rebate for international productions, and park and gorilla-filming permit fees apply and can be significant.

African Fixer will confirm the latest position on permit fees, gorilla-filming permits and any incentives during planning, and manage the permissions, park logistics and accommodation that make Uganda’s locations accessible.

Uganda is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, tracked on foot through the aptly named Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – a filming experience so protected that permits are strictly limited and time with the gorillas is tightly controlled.
